Kafka’s Apartment n Lane
Just for fun, here’s a peek at an apartment that
Kafka lived in for a period of time in Prague:
And the lane that his house is situated in:
It is now been commercialised to become rows of shops now.
If ever you go there one day, you can see it for yourself!!!
Self & Identity: Summary
To sum up what we brought up in class:
Self: is made up of the characteristics that define you; how you see yourself; the intangible unique ‘feel’ that you have about yourself.
Identity: is derived from the roles that you play in society (public identity) & family (more private identity); affected by social interactions; made up of your name, personal appearance etc.
People can have different (and more than one) identities:
Primary Identities: Gender and Ethnicity which are determined at birth (eg. a Chinese boy, an Eurasian girl etc)
Secondary Identities: Occupational and leisure identities (eg. doctor, a football fan, a band groupie)
Evolving Nature of Identity:
One’s identities are NOT fixed but constantly change to suit the varying situations and interactions with others. (Remember: People portray and project themselves differently in different situations, yes?)
Identity is LINKED to self.
Therefore, any changes in Identity would most likely also affect the Self in some way.
Any thoughts / doubts?
Do you see any instances of this in Metamorphosis?
Feel free to air your comments!
What characterises a human being? How is he different from other animals?
Some of your classmates’ views:
Yang Lin / Jasmine:
“Any living or extinct member of the family Hominidae characterized by (i) superior intelligence, (ii) articulate speech, (iii) has more emotions / feelings and (iv) has a mind of his own.”
Other responses to the question above:
Pratika’s group: (v) To humans, appearance is VERY important. Your appearance is the first impression people get of you. On the other hand animals do not see these differences.
Dhivya’s group: (vi) The ability to differentiate between right and wrong while animals base their actions on instinct. (vii) Having compassion and showing humility fellow human beings.
What are your responses to these 7 points brought up by your classmates?
In your blog entry, remember to include:
- Your name
- Refer specifically to at least one of the 7 points above and say whether you agree with it and WHY.
- Give specific examples to support your claim. (Eg. No I believe that animals also possess an emotional faculty since animals like elephants / dolphins…)
- Also bring up any other point(s) that you think characterizes a human being / how he is different from other animals
Happy thinking, sharing and debating!
